Sterile Technique

This page does not discuss Sterile Technique in detail. However, you would do well following a couple of rules:

  1. For any procedure involving leaving any device in the patient’s body – full sterile barrier technique is MANDATORY. That includes sterile surgical gowns and sterile procedure fields. Examples include Central Venous Lines, HD catheters, chest tubes, peritoneal catheters, etc.
  2. For procedures which involve only sampling or removing some of the material from the patient, but do not leave a device in, sterile gown and large sterile field are optional. You Must, however, use bouffant cap, face mask, sterile gloves and a field large enough not to contaminate the equipment.
  3. If you are NOT an experienced operator (and we are taking dozens of procedures), we STRONGLY recommend that you use full sterile barrier technique for ALL your procedures.

Glove Sizing

Glove sizes have not been affected by metrication, and are usually sized from 4 – 10.

A good fit ensures comfort and dexterity during the procedure.

Measure your dominant hand.

Step 1. Measure around the hand at the fullest part (exclude thumb).

Step 2. Measure from the tip of the middle finger to the base of the hand.

Step 3. Use the LARGEST of these two measurements for the correct size glove.

Step 4. The number of inches measured equals the size of the glove.
